Windows Search 4.0

Last weekend I bought two computers to sell. They are both HPs with 3.2 gig P4 processors.
I decided to keep one and started getting the other ready. As I was finishing one of them up I went down to the store that sells them for me and brought one back that had been down there for about a month to update it.

When I'm doing updates I just go to the Windows update site and download and install everything except IE 8, too many bad reports so far. Well this time it bit me in the ...

I installed Windows Search 4.0 on both of them. It literally brought both of the computers to a dragging halt. From having two systems that were ready to sell I went to having two systems that were in serious need of work.

After poking around on the web with Google searches I found that it was possible to uninstall it with add-remove programs in the control panel. On both computers it worked and I got one ready to sell Friday. The other one was still seriously messed up after the uninstall. I couldn't find any problem so I performed a "Repair Install" of XP http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/helpandsupport/learnmore/tips/doug92.mspx
That fixed it but necessitated re-entering the license code, a hassle but it did work. It even kept all of the drivers.
